The Sanctity of Marriage Again on Display

I know that as time goes on, this fight about gay marriage is going to continue to be an issue.  Here in New York, it has been a year since same sex marriage has become a part of the lexicon.  It is so weird that it still is a hot button for people who are crying that same sex marriage is destroying the fabric of American tradition. To quote David Hodorowski “You really think Gays would do anything to harm fabrics?”   I sit and wonder how much time and money are being wasted in preventing people from having their right to marry whomever they please. It’s a shame because you would think that those people really have bigger things to worry about, like their mortgages, their own children, soccer practice, their kids’ college tuitions, etc.  It seems to me that all of those things would be more time consuming and worrisome, but maybe I am wrong.

It always makes me laugh when the most unlikely of people come out with their distaste of same sex marriage.  I saw that Jimmy "J.J." Walker has an unfavorable opinion.  However, who cares what he thinks?  The fact that he even had a conversation with Bill O’Reilly invalidates anything he really has to say, as far as I am concerned, but I am a bit biased. Chick-Fil-A's owner has been quite confident about his need to discuss his company’s attitude toward same sex marriage.  Thankfully, Kermit and Miss Piggy are standing up for us, while Mike Huckabee is calling for his supporters to help Chick-Fil-A.  As we watch how hard this fight is to maintain for both sides, we have to endure the Bachelorette choosing her next love, while Drew Peterson is on trial for killing wife number 3, as wife number 4 is “missing.”   I am sure wives number 1 and 2 are probably in a witness protection program. Last weekend, I was sucked into a mini marathon of OXYGEN Channel’s SNAPPED.   It was really intense.  All of these women killed their spouses or had them killed by jealous lovers.  Who knew that all those shenanigans were going on in the pockets of Ohio, NewMexico and Arizona?  Many of the places represented on SNAPPED now have bans on same sex marriages and civil unions.  What exactly are they protecting?

I was recently told that I am missing the point of what some of these protectors of marriage are really protecting.  The commitment runs deep for these people, and not all marriages end in divorce or murder.   I respect that.   However, I think that what the protectors neglect to understand is that ALL of us have the right to be as committed as we want, and as frivolous as we want, just like them.  I do know that as time goes on, and same sex marriage continues to gain momentum, it will only be a matter of time when LOGO will have its own brand of SNAPPED ,CHEATERS and DIVORCE COURT for all of us to criticize publicly and in secret, watch with insane curiosity.   Some queen or dyke will want to get their Elizabeth Taylor wedding bells on, and honestly, it is their right to do it, so move out of the way, and let everyone have a turn.  Besides, even though African-Americans and women fought so hard to have the right to vote and be treated equally, it does not mean that they all exercise their right to do so now.   Just like marriage, it might be the same thing, so calm the fuck down, get your kids to soccer practice, and stop bothering people.

Happy Anniversary New York.
