For those people who do not live in New York or within spitting
distance of a major city, I am going to apologize to you now, because this
weekend felt like something that can only happen in a place like this. While
taking a break from all of the world’s problems and our own domestic political
peril, there is a fabulous venue in New York called 54 Below. It is a beautiful performance space/supper
club below the historic disco Studio 54 (that now houses a very active Broadway
theater).
54 Below has become the home to many of Broadway’s stars, where
they get to showcase themselves in a whole new way, giving many of us fans and
admirers a chance to have an intimate encounter. Last weekend, I saw Sherie
Rene Scott in her new
show, PIECE OF MEAT. This is an eclectic
musical journey of Ms. Scott’s relinquishing her vegetarianism and returning to
her carnivorous ways, juxtaposing it as a bigger metaphor for making life
choices. This is definitely
a quirky through line on which to hang a show, and at times it is very clear
that as an audience member, you have to just endure the journey. One thing is very consistent: Ms.
Scott proves that she can sing anything, and it makes it all worth the
trip. On a side note, sitting in the audience were Tom Hanks, his gorgeous wife, Rita
Wilson , and the
effervescent, Brooke Shields. Again,
it was a fabulous night in a fabulous space.
Sherie will be at 54 Below until
October 27th. If
you are visiting the New York City area in this time frame, then you must see
her. If you are planning a theater run later this year, then check 54 Below’s calendar. The
food is great. The atmosphere is
sensational. You might get a chance to
see your favorite Broadway star up close and personal. Not to mention, you may
see a few stars in the audience, too. For
those of you who have access to things like this in your towns, I hope that you
take the opportunities, treat yourself, and explore them. In the interim, live vicariously
through me.
