How are you? I hope that you are well. I am writing this letter to you because I really do not think that you are hearing anything that sane, hard working, average Americans are saying to you. So now I will add to the ether. Many of you are so lucky to have made it to the position that you are currently holding because of the anger that we as a nation have been dealing with since 2016. The actual atrocities that a majority of Americans are having to watch daily are hopefully excruciating for you as it is to many of us, YOUR constituents. However, there seems to be a definite lack of action to make some of these things go away.
The images of babies being separated from their families and put in cages, or the images of people being treated like animals and having to live in their own filth, should really be speaking to many more of you than I am witnessing, especially from the so called Christians. We are watching conservative senior elected officials (and you know to whom I am referring), who are clearly allowing for many of these things to happen, because in the flurry of this horrific administrative craziness, they are getting some of the things that they allegedly want for THEIR constituents: 1) conservative judges in every level of our judiciary system to continue a true disrespect for actual rights, laws, and human decency, 2) Religious “freedom” to openly disregard basic civil liberties, and 3) advancing the actual physical destruction of our planet for profit, to name a few.
The overabundance of scandal ridden, incompetent, former lobbyists as cabinet heads, a lack of ambassadors positioned in the world and the U.N. to protect some of our actual interests in the world, and dare I even speak of the current president and his many unsavory and dangerous alliances, social media commentary, and truly abhorrent behavior as a human being in the free world, are just some of the most embarrassing things that I have ever seen. The fact that we are watching this happen and feel powerless even after exercising our right to vote is really painful.
To continue to watch this unfold, makes it almost impossible to believe that in my 50+ years of living in this country that this is the direction of where we are heading. I feel safe in saying that many of us who were young enough to remember the Nixon years, falling down through the Ford years (thank you Saturday Night Live), still trying to understand why everyone hated the Carter Years, being smart enough to survive the Regan/G.H.Bush years, thriving through the good and bad of the Clinton years, living through the war mongering G.W.Bush years, desperately clinging onto the moments of civility and progress during the Obama years, and not jumping off a bridge during this current administration, that what we are experiencing as a nation right now is NOT RIGHT.
We have lies, racism, xenophobia, homophobia, misogyny, and a whole hosts of other isms on deck, coming out this administration, and what are YOU doing about it? So far, there have been a lot of insults hurling back and forth, public hearings that amount to nothing more than some good questions on one side and a pissing contest for sound bites on the other, along with a daily bombardment of breaking news stories with even more information than the previous breaking stories, making it clear that something is afoot, and it feels like none of you are really making something happen to counteract this craziness.
I know that many of you are banking on 2020 to be the year that things are gonna happen, but I need to remind you that NO ONE has come through with something that will protect our elections, especially in the Senate. The Supreme Court has already given gerrymandering a free pass, and voter suppression is still happening EVERYWHERE. If you folks somehow believe that 2020 will be any more fair than 2016 when it comes to these people and their destructive agendas, then you are even more naive than I thought. I know that I am not the only American watching this unfold daily and feeling powerless. More of us Americans have paid more attention to the shenanigans in Washington, D.C. , because it is a horrific car accident, and we are all just rubbernecking.
I implore you to use The Constitutional powers that our forefathers with clairvoyance to counteract this foolishness have bestowed upon you. I am trying to understand how you all can sit by and let this happen without really putting up a fight. The time for playing nice, fair, and compromising is really over. The other side obviously doesn’t care. When they were in total power with both The House and The Senate, they REALLY didn’t care. The ridiculousness that we are witnessing is because many of you are staying silent. Some of you do step up and call out the actual injustices, yet some of your colleagues turn on you. Please note that voting Americans and the World are watching all of you.
After doing our part to put many of you in the offices that you currently hold, it feels as if you are not living up to your part of the bargain. We are in a stalemate, because no one wants to get dirty. This is politics and not a bake sale. I would like to point out that every good bake sale requires a lot of broken eggs, unless you are vegan. So if you want to treat this like a bake sale, then break some damn eggs and let’s get busy.
