WE MIGHT WANT TO RETHINK DITCHING JURY DUTY

This week in Fulton County,Georgia, we have been introduced to Emily Kohrs, the foreperson of the grand jury handling the infamous Donald Trump voter fraud investigation. She has been on a bit of a media tour explaining how excited she was to be a part of the whole experience, and how thrilled she was to meet the likes of Lady G, and how she was disappointed that she did not get to meet or swear in Trump. The amount of glee that she has expressed is akin to finding out that you had  thousands of likes on your Instagram post within a few minutes of posting it.

I know that I am not the only person that did everything in their power to avoid jury duty.  Luckily the first time that I was called for duty, it was for some media company being sued, and my job in the media at the time made me an unacceptable juror choice.  The second time that I was called for jury duty was in a civil case about wealthy condo owners fighting with their even wealthier condo board over repairs.  Clearly, being an unemployed comedian dealing with his own housing issues also made me an unsympathetic juror. I am still trying to figure out why there was even a trial for that one, though.

I am sure that D.A. Fani Willis has lost her everloving prosecuting sh*t trying to figure out why this young woman is talking so much. Of course, many of us have asked the same question.  Apparently in Georgia, it is okay to do this.  She has given CNN, MSNBC, NY Times, and other so much content.  Of course, Miss “in between customer service gigs” Kohrs is clearly loving the attention, like any good millennial would.  However, like many of her generation, she really has not thought through the possible consequences of getting involved in a story like this.  Since we do not yet have the findings of the Special Grand Jury, the lead up started with small redacted bits of conversation about keeping them from the public.  It was then followed with constant speculation of whether or not anything was actually going to happen to those accused.  Now the foreperson of the jury is gleefully dancing around the information that we all want to know and having a ball. This is also putting an even bigger spotlight on the findings.

Her instant fame has us all asking the same questions: if she is the foreperson, then what the hell did the rest of the jury look like, and how soon will they be making their press rounds? The biggest question:  is this person the one that I want on a jury deciding my fate?  The ignorance that this person displays reminds us of the importance that education should have in this country.  She clearly has not realized that she will be a target to unhappy MAGA folks, if charges ARE brought against those allegedly involved. She is also the barometer for changing the laws about current and post jury duty behavior, especially if NO charges are found and filed.

In any case, as we keep watching the destruction of Democracy, the continuous disregard of the rule of law, and the constant struggle for power in this country, we have to be vigilant. If we want to see changes, then we are gonna have to participate. As much as that may stress us out, when we are called to do our civic duty, we have to answer. Although deep down, we are still secretly plotting and praying that we never get picked. The take away lesson from all of this: If we do not participate in this system of justice, then more folks like this woman will. And just like with voting, we might get screwed.
