It’s been a year since I asked the question, “How Much More Proof Do We Need?” So far there have been over 1000 convictions for participants of the January 6th Insurrection, including a Proud Boy admitting guilt to Sedition. It seems that Fulton County GA’s District Attorney, Fani Willis, will soon be releasing the full findings of the Special Grand Jury on whether to pursue charges against Trump regarding the 2020 election. We know that the former Attorney General of Arizona withheld information confirming there was no election fraud in 2020. We have seen conversations about fake electors in states plotting to change the results of the vote in 2020, and so much more. So far, no one high up the ladder in a major position is really being held accountable for their actions, which, when proven, will show they are guilty.
Even FOX News personalities have been discovered lying about their on-air stance on many positions involving the Big Lie surrounding the election of 2020, and secretly admitting that they knew their guests were lying. Is it finally safe to say that they have lied about other things now? I must admit that I am still shocked that it took evidence and the testimony of their boss, Rupert Murdoch, from a billion dollar civil lawsuit that started in 2022, to show that Fox News has a bunch of headline grabbing liars promoting lies, but here we are.
For many of you reading this, the lies are not new, but I am still fascinated at how there still seems to be a sector of this country’s population that simply refuses to see what is actually in front of them. White supremacy, radial Christianity, racism, misogyny, homophobia, xenophobia, and plain ignorance are the lenses through which they choose to view these situations. I guess that makes it easier to believe the lies. So much time has been wasted treating these people as innocent before being found guilty. Our rule of law implicitly dictates that it must be so, or we are no better than a Third World country with no democracy and a flawed or non-existent justice system. It is clear that the many people involved in the whole 2020 election/January 6th Insurrection drama are guilty. Considering how many of these accused folks regard the rule of law, should they be afforded the presumptions of innocence? When these folks behave as if this is a Third World country and then expect to be treated with First World courtesy, it proves that white privilege is real.
As a Black person living in America, it is laughable and infuriating to watch how our justice system has taken its sweet time to arrive at any of this. I am not saying that we should trample the rights of innocent citizens, but we know that not every citizen is given that courtesy, especially if they look anything like me. The other thing that we know, and as unbelievable as it may seem, we are living in a time when a President of this great nation, systematically using almost every corner of his administration and his personal contacts, attempted to overthrow the government and in turn, the will of the people. If we can collectively get behind that reality from the beginning, perhaps we would see many more people from the top of the chain on trial and in jail. I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but if President Obama had attempted to overthrow the government, then he would be under the jail by now. Can you imagine what would have happened to Hillary Clinton in the same situation?
As a country, we have to get past this concept of our sense of American exceptionalism when we talk about many of these issues, because as pointed out below by Ebro Darden, we really are not so exceptional. If we continue to believe this myth and allow these accused people to continue to lie, cheat, and skirt the rules of law without any accountability, then we will never get there.
