Last
night I got to see one of Broadway’s best, Tony Award winning Beth Leavel, in one of my
favorite places in New York, 54 Below. This belting Broadway Baby gives one of the
most hilariously heartwarming, insanely fabulous evenings of song with a little
dance to boot. From the moment she
makes her entrance from the back of the room until the minute she hits that
last note of her encore, you are transported into the fun and crazy, uber
groovy world that Ms. Leavel creates.
She gives you everything on that stage, and she leaves you wanting more. Her song choices range from Cole Porter
standards and Broadway classics to some Whitney Houston with a sneak into SOMETHING
ROTTEN. The latter being a potential
upcoming Broadway show.
As
a natural comedienne, Ms. Leavel commands laughter almost without effort. Because she knows who she is as a performer
when she is on the stage, she camps it up with her best Liza Minnelli homage
with CITY LIGHTS and then can bring you almost to the brink of tears with her
interpretation of Jerry Herman’s BEFORE THE PARADE PASSES BY from Hello Dolly, and then she can pick you
up with AS WE STUMBLE ALONG making you cheer.
She might make light about reaching a “dramatic arc” within her show, yet
she delivers every song and every story with such passion and precision. She knows exactly how to hold an audience in
the palm of her hand, and you will be so glad to be there. There’s one more performance on March 3rd, and if
you are in NYC, then you must be present.
She really is one of the Dames of the Great White Way, but within that
dame beats the heart of one talented Broad. Don’t miss her!
Go
to 54 Below for reservations.
